BA (Hons) Fashion (W230)

Online Portfolio

A sketchbook insight- This image features near the beginning of my A2, A-level art project. The photo presents my development of an artist research carried out in an A3 sized sketchbook. The artist research of ‘Mark Powell’ a biro artist includes different mediums, various textures, small drawings sampling the artist’s medium and different interactive aspects which the person viewing the work can move and touch creating an interactive theme to each page.

A woven timeline- This piece is additionally from my A-level A2 art project, the topic being ‘photographs that hold memories we forget’, conveying a photo can hold a thousand words. This piece is a biro drawing on thin ply wood. The size being A1 stands out in reality for the striking, extreme perspectives of the enlarged hands. The drawing displays a textile element of the 3D accompanying knitting trail which reaches correspondingly out  of the wood and shows a set of photos which have been created through a range of techniques including image maker, acetate and paint.

Burberry and G21 collaboration- This particular piece is the introductory page for my A-level A2 Textiles project which was a mood board. The entirety of this project was done via computer design and program in comparison to work that has been done by hand, and is presented in an electronic format. The mood board features the Design brief of the project along with potential themes, concepts and ideas that have been presented within a visual way and have been collected from both the Burberry brand and the George brand.

-This page was collected from my initial designs of  A2 textiles A-level project. The page included description of each of the designs and the basic sketched drawings using colour , shape and construction.

-This page of Textiles coursework shows the media and marketing techniques that would be used to commercially put my garment on sale. It shows interesting design and visual techniques, along with images of the final garment, bag and label design and further aspects such as marketing campaigns that would advertise the garment to a larger audience.

The final Garment- After carrying out a range of research, design work, the production , marketing and evaluation, this is the final garment. The design brief included features  for the Autumn/ Winter season and to be worn for day wear/ evening wear. The model wearing my final garment is that of someone who would fit the design brief- client profile. The garment is a playsuit connecting a chiffon, short sleeved blouse and a ‘skort’ design which has a free hand embroidered paisley pattern.

-The following images are a selection of some interesting and my favourite projects I have completed so far on my Art and Design Foundation course.

The Slave ship’ (original Turner painting featured within the image above) -As a Fine art project we analysed and studied Turner’s Slave ship painting, the end aim to create an installation that represented this piece. This installation took up a corner of a room. The piece was created within a group that included two other members; ‘Ria Alexia’ and ‘Gina Vinti’. The use of textured paper recreated an intimidating appearing wave, the wooden piece represented the broken apart ship, the chains portraying the drowning shackles that the slaves would have worn. The only hope within the installation being the string beams that are directed to the burning lantern.

Topshop Designs ‘Rock N’ Roll Girls’- This is a further developed set of designs that specifically were inspired by the original Topshop designs I had seen featured in the Autumn/ Winter 2014 Topshop range and current campaigns. This  sheet was collected from my sketchbook work included in my first fashion rota where the subject matter was to up-cycle and recycle.

Recycle Upcycle- This  board displays the initial Fashion and Textiles project I completed whilst doing the art foundation. This piece shows an A1 design board, highlighting the design process and the various stages of making that I explored across this project. Themes and general ideas can be seen in the floral based photos. The final garment can also be seen, this being a top and skirt which had to be wholly made from reused and recycled materials. The board presents outrageous and quirky designs of my final garment, inspired by such designers as Vivienne Westwood whose Anglomania collection influenced me.

The friendly Giant- Ron Mueck’s 3D created model work using extremity of size and the use of  realism of the body and face. The models he creates intrigue me for their bold stares and quizzical meanings. This particular drawing in the medium of biro was of interest to me due to the model it related to in reality being extremely large and giant like.  This was a piece of sketchbook work that accompanied my research for this artist. I enjoy creating realistic illustrations  focusing on the face and like to incorporate them with fashion ideas and concepts across my projects.

Barcode illustrations-The main focus of my 3-D project within the first rota of the art foundation took the base of illustration and further physical modelling using clay to form portraiture in new and exciting ways.  The first artist I looked at was ‘YIYING LU’ who’s ink illustrations use barcodes allowing you to scan them and directly leading you to the website that links to the artist and specifically the celebrity figures who she’s drawn. I have done an artist copy of one of the more interesting figures using the medium of ink, this response was within my sketchbook work.

‘The Edge’ was a project I took on within the subject of Visual Communication within the Art Foundation.  This project  was based upon identity and this  piece was created via Photoshop and InDesign, two programs that I have learned to use whilst on the art foundation. I chose to make a magazine, with the focus figure being Twiggy. The project I carried out concentrated on illustration. The final outcome was to be presented in A4 size. The cover features visual design and various text effects  that make it look individual and bold.

A Reflection Of The Past- Throughout the foundation art course I completed a photography course which included a selection of work in sketchbook and the final outcome of my own manually produced photos. This is a design board which includes a lot of test pieces and final experimentation of the photography processes. The   A1 size board recalls a visual representation of the past and the incorporation of all the things that make up who you are, your identity. Technique of sandwich printing has merged images together creating what looks like a figure made of branches, like a ‘family tree’.

‘A Child’s toy’- This particular response is from a fine art project across the art foundation which had the subject matter of my personal identity, where I chose to look back at the past, the present and the future. This response is biro and was drawn within my sketchbook  relating to personal possessions that are linked to the past and perhaps even my personal memories.

Whenever a project is introduced to me I create various pages in my sketchbook that contain images, drawings, textures and in general basic ideas and concepts I initially think about. The project being named ‘Identity’, these were some of my ideas which were  developed into further research, designs and a final garment that followed all these basic initial concepts. The page includes techniques such as screen printing - the type writer, which was a sample technique I practiced during the development of my project before it was used in my garment.

The mask- This image shows a double page spread of my sketchbook work from my Fashion and Textiles Identity project. The left shows my chalk drawing of what appears to be a female figure taking off her face, leading me to the idea that her face shows her feelings and emotions to everyone but it is actually a mask that isn’t the real person, it’s a false perception put on for others benefit. I discussed other aspects of the identity such as the anatomy of the body. The image on the right shows various images and sewing samples.

The watchful eye- This photo shows development design work from my identity Fashion and Textiles project. The sketches show ink and water colour illustration of the potential garments I plan to create, using the recurring symbol of the eye which is seen to represent ‘the watchful eyes of everyone around us in society that influences us and creates an identity for us’. The fashion pages also show some media responses that highlight particular concepts and ideas, the second page of the spread showing a designer research ‘Mary Katrantzou’ whose bold colours, shapes and use of intricate embroidery interested me.

The final garment- The merged images of my final garment from the fashion and Textiles Identity themed rota show the dipped hem style jacket that sits upon the figures frame, fitted using darts and  reaches  down in one back panel, and repeats the increasing in size and therefore powerful eye design (created using image maker) and hand stitched into, giving the technique a rough and bold effect.

Identity- This piece shows an A1 design board portraying a ‘mood and concept’ board that has the thesis ‘Growing up in a society that pressures you to have an identity. But it’s chosen by everyone else’. It shows the basic concepts and initial thought process I came across when dealing with the topic of the journey to find both my identity and perhaps the similar struggles that others experience. The idea that the people around us influence us in such large degrees can encourage us to make our identity which may be false, a mask, you’re misperceived by everyone.

Identity part 2 – This particular piece A1 design board  is the follow up to my identity project that displays both the design ideas and further development of my project- such as designers I came into contact with. Additionally showing images of my final garment which are displayed in a quite ‘grunge’ styled and ‘edgy’ format. This particular project was only a two week duration, which taught me many skills such as time management, in which I had to not only create a sketchbook portfolio of work, a final garment produced, to a set of design boards.
